The Experience
Mount Cain, a community-operated ski area on Northern Vancouver Island near Woss, offers exceptional deep powder skiing, minimal wait times, and a genuine mountain experience. Its distinction as the highest base elevation among coastal ski resorts in BC, Alaska, and Washington State positions it as an ideal destination for powder enthusiasts, tree line exploration, and backcountry terrain.
Mount Cain offers diverse terrain suited to all skill levels across its 21 runs. The lower slopes feature meticulously groomed trails ideal for beginners and intermediate skiers, providing stable, predictable conditions for skill development. In contrast, the upper terrain accessed via T-bar remains intentionally ungroomed, preserving natural snow conditions and offering untracked powder descents for advanced skiers and tree enthusiasts. This combination creates a unique experience—with 20% beginner runs, 45% intermediate terrain, and 35% advanced slopes—allowing visitors to progress from maintained trails to pristine backcountry-style skiing. The resort's abundant annual snowfall of 1,500 centimeters ensures consistent powder conditions throughout the season, while the extensive tree coverage provides natural terrain features and protected skiing opportunities that appeal to those seeking authentic mountain experiences beyond manicured runs.
The group will be staying overnight at Mt. Cain's on-site lodge accommodations, which provide convenient access to the skiing and snowboarding terrain. Youth will be housed in shared dormitory-style rooms, allowing them to bond with fellow participants while keeping costs manageable. The lodge offers essential amenities including heating, hot water, and meal facilities to ensure comfort during the trip. Chaperones will be assigned to monitor sleeping areas and ensure the safety and well-being of all participants throughout the night. All youth are expected to be in their assigned rooms by 10:00 PM for lights out, with wake-up time at 7:00 AM to prepare for a full day on the slopes. Please ensure your youth brings appropriate sleepwear, toiletries, and any necessary medications for the overnight stay.
What to bring
Download Packing ListIt is essential that participants bring all the items on the packing list the returning youth will be making to ensure a safe and positive experience. If any gear is missing from any participant, the trip may be cancelled. If the participant does not have any of this gear, please let WEA know prior to the trip. The packing list can be found in the trip folder (once the youth planning have completed it). Remember to bring all trip paperwork. Please note that the list may be changed in the days prior depending on weather and snow conditions.
Weather & Terrain
Mount Cain typically experiences cold, snowy conditions during the winter ski season, with daytime temperatures ranging between -5°C and 0°C and overnight lows dropping to -10°C or below. Participants should expect variable weather patterns, including potential snowfall, wind, and occasional clear skies. The mountain's elevation means conditions can change rapidly, so layering is essential for comfort and safety. Youth are required to bring waterproof winter outerwear, including a jacket and snow pants, warm base layers, insulated gloves, a warm hat, and thermal socks to stay protected from the elements. We strongly recommend bringing sunscreen and lip balm with SPF protection, as snow reflection can intensify UV exposure even on cloudy days.
What will my child learn?
Participants will develop fundamental and intermediate skiing and snowboarding skills through instruction from certified professionals, including proper stance, balance, edge control, turning techniques, and speed management. Youth will progress through terrain of varying difficulty, learning to navigate groomed runs, handle moguls, and build confidence on steeper slopes appropriate to their ability level. The program focuses on technique refinement and skill advancement, helping participants improve their form whether they're beginners discovering skiing for the first time or experienced riders looking to enhance their performance.
